Have you ever felt torn between the life you’ve built and the life your soul is quietly whispering about? For years, I was a nurse — a steady career, a clear identity, a role everyone around me understood. But under the surface, I was unraveling. Burnout had drained me, and yet the idea of leaving nursing felt terrifying. Who was I without that title? What if I failed at something new? What could I even do? What skills are transferrable? This is the story of how I finally committed to becoming a soulpreneur, the shadows I had to face, and the support that carried me through.
You can find even more on my journey about this topic here: Burned Out & Rebuilding as a Neurodivergent Woman
After awhile, burnout wasn’t just about me — it was about my family, too. My oldest son is neurodivergent, and I reached a point where I realized I couldn’t show up for him the way he needed me to while also pouring everything into my job that I resented. I was torn between two loves: the career I had built (rather, the identity I had crafted for myself) and the family I was responsible for.
Ultimately (& obviously), I chose my children. I left nursing and stepped into being a stay-at-home mom. At first, pieces of me felt free — but that’s also when the shadows got louder.
This process is also what drove me to ask myself some clarifying questions – these are the same kinds of clarifying questions I now offer in my free burnout tools. If you’re wondering whether your own burnout is temporary or a call toward something more, I created two free tools to help you reflect: Career Burnout Breakthrough Checklist & Should I Stay or Should I Go? A Burnout Clarity Map for Career Transitions. You’ll find both in my Freebies section.
Even though I had “escaped” burnout, I quickly realized leaving my career wasn’t the end of the struggle. Soulpreneur-ship and stay-at-home-motherhood was the beginning of a new layer of shadow work & uncovering my own personal limiting beliefs.
The shift from being a nurse to being “just” at home stripped away my old identity. I had to face who I really was without the title and paycheck to define me. This eventually drove me to have many more enlightening experiences – Ego death. Awakening. Identity collapse. Grief. And in that process, I also built The Ashes Journal – and it helped me write my way through collapse and come out stronger on the other side.
Everything began to make more sense when I discovered Human Design. Learning I am a Projector reframed so much of what I’d been wrestling with.
As a soulpreneur I understood that my purpose and gift here is not about doing more — it’s about being valued for what I see. My natural role is to guide, tweak, optimize, and offer resonance-based insights that help systems, families, and people function more efficiently.
This clicked in a way that freed me:
Human Design didn’t just give me validation. It gave me a blueprint for permission. Permission to honor my energy, lean into my gifts, and stop trying to force myself into roles that never fit.
With that awareness, I finally said yes. Yes to stepping into entrepreneurship in the realm of energetics, metaphysics, and healing spaces. Yes to guiding, educating, mentoring — but this time from a place of alignment instead of depletion.
This wasn’t about rejecting nursing. It was about expanding beyond it, into the role I was always meant to play: a leader who supports others on their awakening and healing journeys.
If you’re standing at that crossroads too — burned out from the career that once defined you, but not yet ready to fully step into what’s calling you — I see you. The fears are real, the shadows are heavy, but the freedom on the other side is worth it.
Your path doesn’t have to look like mine. But if your soul is nudging you toward something bigger, maybe it’s time to listen.
